Potassium Permanganate?

I have read potassium permanganate is used in small doses to treat fish against bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infection. Additionally, it could be used to get your protein skimmer working again after a severe bacteria bloom. Which would be my inteded use. An oily film has resulted and my skimmer has gone flat. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone, if so how have they treated it? Is there a better way than this chemical?

I certainly think a good washing in warm/hot water and the skimmer will be fine, and as to it working in the tank, it should work just fine without PP being added. Have you used Chemi Pure or Puri Gen or even Activated Charcoal and even a water change?
What else is in that tank yu propose using PP in?Corals, Live rock, fish, are they capable of tolerating it? At what strength is it safe for what you have....all critters do not tolerate PP at the same rate. I use a lot of PP in my fresh water ponds, tanks etc as well as in my saltwater stuff. If used right its hard to beat and does a bang up job, but it can be lethal just as easy, and if there is a method of doing what needs to be done without PP yur better off with that method. Its super at oxidizing organics, knocking out bacterial infections, fungal problems, Ich, algae blooms and a host of other stuff. I use it for sanitzing plants and my nets etc so I do not cross contaminate any tanks, as well as medicinal and prophyalactic treatment of my outside ponds 2 times each year to oxidize organics and knock down any pathogens and parasites and algae.

Wow, thanks for the thorough response... I will try the hot water cleaning of the skimmer before the PP. I have been making water changes avery other day becasue my parameters are way off. I have recently added activated charcoal and have not seen results yet.... I have not tried Chemi Pure or Pure Gen, not sure what these products do.
Fish only tank (Porcupine puffer and Clown trigger) thus the high dissloved proteins... I ahve removed all live rock... Not sure at what levels I would be dosing my tank, research shows 1-2mg/L. How much do you dose in a marine aquarium?

Hard to say depends on what is in it. Hermits can take a heap of it, stars can not, neither can all corals, but you probabky do not have corals. I have had liverock do fine and I have had live rock die......Chemi pure and Puri Gen is made to remove impurities from systems, and works fine. Its expensive but its reusable and able to be regenerated. I would think water changes weekly or so would have kept protein levels down and the skimmer would have done the rest of the job. I find that I need to clean my protein skimmers about every 3 or 4 months or they do not skim as good. Once cleaned with a brush and warm water they work like new again.
