i have a extra wide 55 gallon tank and i have a scopas that maybe hardly 2 inches and the store i currently work at is selling a powder blue about 3 to 3.5 inches could i house it in my tank for up to a year till i got my new tank ready

Yes, but do QT they are very easy to stress and get ich.
No, powder blue tangs have a very large territory in the ocean and when placed in small tanks, they become very agressive and stressed out. I would advise against it.

I tried one in a 120 gal. Stressed out and didnt live long!

I would say no as well. Its not the width its the length of the tank. a 125 would be better.
I agree withe the "no's". I wouldn't put even a tiny PB in a tank that small. IMO & IME: PBs are fairly easy fish to keep if you can keep the stress level down and having enough space is critical.
IMO, a 55 is much too small for either. A 55 is really a small SW tank and I'd suggest you look at smaller fish. I think everyone in this hobby can sympathize with you, we've all been there.
