How high should I place PC lights above my tank? I have them about 6inches above the water now. Is this to high?

I have my 3 - 96 watt PCs about 4 inches off the water surface when the lid is closed on my 80-gallon tall reef tank. I have a bit more evaporation during the summer when it gets warm, but I just prop the lid open with a soup can to help aerate.

Mine are only about 3 inches. However, the temp in the house is maintained at about 78 and the tank stays just under 80.
