i found a power filter for ~23.00 and Filters at a rate of 160 gph, combines mechanical & chemical filtration w/the Mechanichem filter cartridge that is easy to change & is designed for maximum efficiency. It features a unique assembly for combining oxyden for the biological filtration.
does it sound like a good filter because im just starting out and im getting a 65 gallon tank and says recommended for aquariums 10-60 gallons.so do you think this is a good power filter???

I bet what you are talking about is a wisper type, its junk on a saltwater or freshwater tank, buy a good book and read it on reef tanks.

i agree what you're looking at is a whisper or emperor power filter--the hang on the back type. Not the best choice for salt.,but it can work if you're at least not going into reefkeeping and if you do decide to go with these then get 2. If the label says 10-60 never use it for anything more than 30. You can't OVER filter (well I suppose you could, but that's a long story) Exactly what you decide on depends on what you're keeping in this 65g tank. Your equipment will vary alot between reef keeping and fo
Good Luck

I have used two of these filters on a 90 gal. fresh tank for about 2+ years. They have been reliable, but are a pain to clean. The replacement cartrages are about $6 for three at walmart. Each filter takes two cartrages...so i'm spending about $12 every three weeks. I would not use these filters on a reef.
If you don't have a drilled aquarium, they are a good alternative to a sump w/overflow box. I did not have a good experience with a sump on my freshwater tank.

IME w/ hangon filters w/ replaceable cartridges, you could actually simply wash w/ prepped water & simply reuse up to a point at least...you can use them for small reef tanks if you do water changes or you could removed the filter media & simply use as circulation or some kind of crude refugium
