Hi, Im having a hard time finding the best place to position the power heads in my tank. I currently have two power heads in my 65 gallon tank, at the moment it is a FOWLR. I cant seem to find a setup where the sand isn't being blown all over the place but also doesn't accumulate crap all over the sand bed. I do have very fine sand, which in hindsight may not have been the best way to go. Any tips or advice on finding the perfect placement? Thanks
Hi,
Try placing the PHs on the back of the tank and pointed a little upwards, to allow the flow to hit the front glass and bounce back. That SHOULD allow the created water current to circulate without hitting the sand directly. If you are not sure of how the water is circulating, you can take a stick and attach a plastic ribbon to the end...move the stick to different areas, if the ribbon drops it's a dead spot...if the ribbon is being beat to death, it's a high flow area.
You don't necessarily need the sand to be "cleared" with water flowing over it...as long as food isn't settling on the sand it should be fine. The flow should be enough to not allow anything to just lay there in any one spot. You may just need a proper CUC of sand diggers to keep the sand moved. Such as the nassarius snails, they dig and burry themselves in the sand and come out to eat any food that settles.
or
You have too much flow, and it is beating everything to death, sand included.
