power out

My little generator...ran both tanks pump systems and the chillers along with my BiPap machine (I tested it to be sure). I could have tried to add a light but I didn't want to push for anything not 100% needed. I was thinking that I would have to run one tank then run the other for a while, but it handled both tanks without a problem at all.
I did run the bubblers on the battery operated pumps...once it looked like the power was going to be off a while when I called the power company, my brother in law came over and set up the generator, it had never been used before. The power was out from 4:30 to 9:15...The generator ran from 7:30 until power was restored. At best it was just a test run but now I know for sure it can handle it.
I can't express how worried I was when I called the power company and heard the automated system saying they didn't know why the power was out, and had no information on when power would be restored, to call back for futher information that would be made available as soon as possible. The only thing going thru my head right then was ...Oh Crap!
We had a little sprinkle of rain, I do mean a sprinkle, and some wind that blew over in about 10 minutes. AFTER the little storm burst the power flickered off once, come back on for just a second and then went off....
That little generator is real peace of mind, now that I know it runs both tanks and my BiPap (AKA, my life support when I sleep) I feel so much better.

That's nice, we also have a little generator that's never been seriously used - only to test during a short Port outage.
It's also nice to know that you'll still be alive after the next overnight power outage in your area! Lol.

Thats awesome. I am glad it worked out for you. Having that peace of mind makes all the difference.
I'm still in happy shock that little geneator could run all of that. All my pumps including the powerheads are run on a single power stripe so I can shut it all off at once to feed the seahorses. The chiller is on the stripe because I don't want it to run dry without the pumps working.
I had two power outlets on the generator, so I ran a cord to each tanks power strip....and it worked without a problem. The lights are not on the strip, nor the bubblers. Only the chillers and pumps...that's all I needed to keep the tanks alive. I was thinking I couldn't feed the horses until tomorrow daylight....but when the power came on, I let them wake up and fed them late.
I had an open outlet...so I turned on my BiPap machine, my mother was worried about me, not the fish tanks. LOL...so now she has peace of mind as well...

I lost a Hippo tang I had for 5 years, and my favorite Lemonpeel angelfish. We had a blackout for 4 days. I was taking water from the tank and letting it free fall back into the tank from a container every hour on the hour trying to keep the tanks alive. I lost the fish when I took a nap for 4 hours in my chair because I was so tired. I never cried so hard over a fish in my life. There was no generator to even purchase nor any battery powered pumps...not even batteries...The stores were cleaned out.
After that, I got battery powered air pumps, and the generator. I have not needed them for 2 years, I was so glad that I had what I needed this time, and as soon as I can afford it, I'm going to get a generator hard wired into the house. Because I like watching TV and keeping the food in the freezer cold too. LOL..we had the fish tanks on good life support while my mother and I sat in dark and talked...we checked the freezer real quick to make sure there was no icecream we had to eat...sadly, we had none.

In some areas, the power company will give priority to folks who are dependent on electricity for life support. You might call your power company and see if they have such a program in your area.

I had no idea you could do that. I don't really understand how they could really do anything. If a line is down, it's down. There are always people on oxygen and such in every area. My Dad had a generator because he had COPD and was oxygen dependent. You know to be honest, folks don't concider the CPap or BiPap to be equally as important as oxygen.
The majority think of sleep apnea to be a problem that just won't allow you a good nights sleep. Only medical personal seem to know the damage it can cause. Even nurses in the hospital I was in were amazed sleep apnea did the damage it did. Folks understand, enlarged heart, pulmonary embolism and stroke....but they don't relate it to sleep apnea. Not that it's the only cause of such conditions, but it is right up there at the top of the list.
I do think that insurance should help pay for a generator if you need it to run life support gizmos. I could afford my generator, but there are lots of folks who can't. The electric company can't turn off the power if you don't pay your bill but that's about it for the help they offer.

Reggie White died from sleep apnea.

Well, with the apnea, you don't have a problem, unless you fall asleep. With COPD requiring o2 all the time, then you do have a big problem if the electric goes out. I know when my mom was alive, she had COPD, we let the electric co. know about her o2 dependency. They would give priority to repairing outage at her house, and would also call to let us know in advance if there was going to be a planned outage due to repairs.
BTW, how is your dog that lets you know about the stopped breathing doing? Notice any change to her nighttime behavior?

That's why I don't want to complain to the electric company...there are people all over with problems bigger than mine. I felt a twinge of guilt when I got the handicap placard. Although I'm glad to have it, I can't walk more than 200 yards...
Atticus no longer wakes me up thru the night. I had to laugh at him...The first night home from the hospital, I wore the BiPap head gear and it made that respirator noise...LOL..he got up and back feet on the floor, he put his front legs across my belly.... and stared at my face...for like a full two minutes...I guess when he figured I wasn't under attack by it he left me be.
I now allow him to sleep on the bottom of the bed if he wants, he actually puts one paw on the bed and looks at me...and waits to see if I will allow him on the bed. I pat my side and he goes ahead and jumps up to the foot of the bed, he usually stays there until I fall asleep. Sometime thru the night, I never know when he gets off the bed, he goes and sleeps beside me on the floor, his usual spot. Whatever room I'm in, I look around and there he is. He doesn't make a pest of himself by wanting attention, he just stays close.
LOL...after I typed that last paragraph, I turned around in my chair and there he was...so I snapped this picture...
He has been right behind me all this time, I bored him to sleep.

Awwwwww that's cute. When I'm on here, sometimes my dog will crawl under the desk and warm my feet. My dog will also almost all the time will stay up on the couch in the living room, and follows the last person up every night... she falls asleep most of the time, but as soon as she hears someone go up the stairs, she springs right up and follows them upstairs.

I used to let my little Chihuahua named Abby sleep in bed with my wife and I. Very well trained dog - never wet the bed or anything and when the alarm clock went off, she made sure you always woke up because it was BREAKFAST TIME. lol.

LOL...The first post I ever posted, I got scolded for talking about cute puppies. It has been a bit slow around the forums lately, I'm glad you were entertained. We need some more of your joke threads
