powerhead killed 2 snails

This morning before leaving for work I saw another one of my Astrea snails being sucked into the intake of my power head. I tried to pull him off but his shell came off and he shot out the outtake. This happened to another Astrea snail last month...My turbo snails much bigger so this is not a problem for them. I have 2 powerheads and one is positioned at the very top (to disturb the surface water) and the other is down by the bottom...Both deaths have been on the top powerhead. Any ideas?

Hey,
I did a little DIY project and put screens on the intake. I used the intake filters found on most HOT filter products. Some PH also have add on kits to put small filters on the intakes. Just take the foam or mesh biological filter that's inside and they work great.

Just place a bio-ball at the suction end of the pump. It will stay in place as long as the power head is on. Works great!
Maxi-jet powerheads come standard with a suction guard, in case you're ever looking at a new/another powerhead.
