powerhead or protein skimmer

ok i have a jbj lighting 24 gallon nano cube and am trying to make the tank more effective. My tank itself puts out 290 GPH.
i have LR, LS, hermits, snails, blue mushroom, sun coral, a peppermint shrimp, a clown, and a bangaii cardinal
I have a powerhead in there but it is huge and sticks out like a sore thumb
so I wanna have something smaller and more effective
Im gonna ditch the huge powerhead and either do a smaller powerhead or a protein skimmer
The fission nano skimmer has a built in powerhead 84 GPH.
Any ideas?
Plus JBJ's website says that ceramin rings and bioballs are only for fish only tanks... true or false? I have them in my tank and mine is not a fish only tank

my related problem/question?
I have a 20 gal high with a 6line wrasse.... LR/LS/Fluval 205/powerhead... everything OK except constant growth of hair/green algae (despite my water changes)....
I have no protein skimmer.... too big a contraption for a small tank I think....
Can anyone recommend a small protein skimmer??
thanks

I'd start another thread and give more info on your specific tank. Water parameters(actual numbers) age, ect. Algea is sometimes a different issue.
