What is the purpose of the Venturi Tube? Do you get the same amount of circulation not using it? How do I know whether or not I should use it?

I believe they're mainly used for under gravel filtration hook up.
You can use it for aireation but in my opinion there's to many bubbles no matter how you adjust it.
