What is a good brand of power head for a Reef tank. I am flowing bout 12x per hour. I want a little more. Opinions needed. Thanks

Maxi-Jets are supposed to be pretty good if not one of the best. I have an AquaClear, and its ok also. Stay away from the Penguin if you can. The pump is good, but the one suction cup that it comes with attaches to the side of the PH and the PH hangs crooked, the bottom of the PH rides up against the glass and is loud. Stay away from the Rio pumps, I have heard that these are not to reliable.
FYI, for a reef tank, you should have 20 - 25x flow...

20-25x flow....that is a lot. i have had several corals that do not like flow at all. That much might make a few unhappy! Do you think smaller powerheads, like 2 would be better than getting 1 big one?

I agree with the maxi-jet power heads, and me personally i like 2 smaller rather than one larger for circulation!

No not at all,i use a maxi-jet 1200 to move the surface water and 2 maxi-jet 600's for extra circulation.Just don't shoot them down at your sand bed,or substrate!

Maxijet 900 use only 8 watts compared to the 21 watts that Maxijet 1200's use and push 230 GPH which is pretty good.

I run 2 Maxi-jet 600s in a 37 gal. They're the first ones that I bought, so I really don't know the difference between those and others. On the other hand, my skimmer arrived on Friday with a more powerful power head (name unknown), and I will be interested to see how well it works.

I am going to pipe in and say that I really like the new SEIO pumps, they have a very wide flow pattern much better for corals than the jet of water most powerheads have.

I agree with birdy, the seio's push 620 gallons of water for the same 8 watts you get with the little maxijet.

I first went with the Eheim powerhead because I trusted the name and it had zero flow to it....but you could tell it was a good head very quiet and has a sheek design. I ended up taken your advice and went with the maxijet 1200. It has good flow to it...it really does flow what it says...around 295 gph which is what I needed. The only con is that you cant ajust the flow if you want, all you can do is redirect. I like it though...its solid. Thanks for everones help with my tank. I will post pics :cheer: soon.
