Powerhead Question

I am planning to add a powerhead to my 46gal tank. I am thinking of getting the AquaClear 402 (aka AquaClear 50) which pumps 270gph. Would this be sufficient or would it be too powerful for a 3 feet tank? I don't want it to be too strong for my fish, but I want it to be powerful enough to circulate the water.
Also what would the optimal location for the powerhead. Should I put it just below the water line and angle the water flow toward the bottom of the tank or should I put it ioward the middle of the tank and have the water flowing upward at an angle?

how much filtration do you have?
a 300 gph powerhead is not too much. I have 2 of them, a 300 gph HOB filter, and a 300 gph skimmer on my 40 breeder (also a 3 foot tank).
it is usualy suggested to have somewhere between a 15-22 times tunrover rate.
