I would like to get a clear answer as to powerheads. I plan on using the maxi jet 1200's and would like to know how many is needed. I have a 55 gallon bowfront and wanting to use maxi jet 1200's..
Question 1) How many stock 1200 would i need and should they be placed on opposite sides of the tank.
Question2) Would it make sense to upgrade these with the kit to 2000gph. Or is this overkill.

The answer to both of these questions depends on what you plan on keeping in your tank? Fish only? Softies? SPS corals?

It really all depends on what you are using as filter or return pump (if you are using a sump or wet/dry).

I am using a bio wheel filter by penguin. It will be a full fish, Reef, some soft coras.

There's no clear answer. Most of us switch up our flow from time to time. It's really something that you have to play with. Generally it's good to have indirect flow so positioning them on the back two corners of the tank and pointing them at the middle of the frong glass is a good start as both streams will meet at the front and create a turbulant flow. It really depends on how your rocks are placed. I personally don't like the maxijets anymore as the flow is too narrow and did not work for me. I still use a maxijet at the bottom near my sand in the back of my tank but I've upgraded my powerheads to hydor koralias which produce a wide soft flow.
