Powerhead with wave-maker question..

I have a 36"W 65G tank. My wonderful fiancee got a JBJ wave maker system that is 2 x 500GPH power heads. It is pretty cool how it cycles but my concern is that the 500gph power heads aren't producing enough flow. However, the step up is a 2 x 1600gph which I'm afraid might be overkill on our tank or would it be ok since they would be cycling on and off?
I don't want to blow my corals away or give the fish a current from hell. Should I go for the 2 x 1600 which is 20+ x's the displacement (each) of my tank where as the 2x500 is only less than 10 x's the displacement (each)?
Keep in mind I also have the flow off the return line heads from my sump which is about 3' away and is pushed by a 750GPH pump. The flow from the return line actually feels stronger. I currently have the 2 x 500's installed and not sure if they are moving enough water. Am I only looking to move water or do I want heavy flow/current?
I'm looking for opinions such as return the wave maker system all together and get 2 different sized powerheads or should I keep this kit or get the larger one?

One thing is that I have to wonder about the dubious ratings of the JBJ pumps/PH's...IME, they're cheap Chinese-made pumps that draw too much power for their output. That being said, I do like the little wavemaker unit, altho IME, both pumps stick "on" after power interruptions, so the dwell needs to be reset afterwards, at least on my unit.
Personally, I'd go with their wavemaker and use my own choice of pumps.
What you want is good flow in the areas of the tank that require it, you don't need to buffet the critters in the tank.

Thank you for the replies. I was thinking along lines of also using my own choice of powerheads. Maybe a 750 & 900/1000gph series. Right now everything looks good and flows lightly when the pumps are kicked on
