i'm not more than 5yrs sure, so if anyone else answers listen to them.
what i do is position the filters and skimmers to make the most motion. the skimmers suck at motion (at least mine do
) so my most powerful powerhead is at that side of the tank. my other ones are on the other side of the tank.
what i look for is complete motion on the top water of the tank. if you have a still spot you're going to have maggots, mosquitos, frogs, or whatever stagnant pond parasite things you have in your environment (i'm ks midwest) oh yeah, my place isn't nasty, i just tend to leave the windows open.
so to me motion on the top is more important than the bottom. my scooter and cleanup crew tend to the bottom way more. search "sand sifters". i also turn off my fluval when i feed so it doesn't take in all the food.
