:D i'm not more than 5yrs sure, so if anyone else answers listen to them.
what i do is position the filters and skimmers to make the most motion. the skimmers suck at motion (at least mine do :( ) so my most powerful powerhead is at that side of the tank. my other ones are on the other side of the tank.
what i look for is complete motion on the top water of the tank. if you have a still spot you're going to have maggots, mosquitos, frogs, or whatever stagnant pond parasite things you have in your environment (i'm ks midwest) oh yeah, my place isn't nasty, i just tend to leave the windows open. :)

so to me motion on the top is more important than the bottom. my scooter and cleanup crew tend to the bottom way more. search "sand sifters". i also turn off my fluval when i feed so it doesn't take in all the food.
