I always hear people talk of powerheads in their tank. Right now I have a filter on the back of my tank (its not one of the wet/dry filters). I was just wondering what a powerhead is and if it is necessary for a tank. thanks.

power heads are considered to be important in a swf tank. the are used as a source for under gravel filters,(which a lot of swf hobbyists dont approve of) and for water movement. water movement in a tank is very important and these serve this purpose well. you can also buy an adapter, or some even come with the ph to make it into more of a filter, now this serves two good purposes. i think i saw you have a 90 gal. i would recommend 2-3 ph's for good water movement.

powerheads re submersiblre pumps which yu put in the tank, and help alot for good circulation in a sw tank, you need alot of circ. and no dead spots, my reccommendation for sw, is 10 times your tank capacity per hour, and you really need powerheads to achiev this with no calm areas
i have 5 totla in my 75, i would reccommend a minimum of 3, maybe 4 on a 75 or 90 gallon, jsut add up your total circulation too,a nd use at least 3 or 4 plus your filter
