What is the best size of powerhead for a 10 gal tank?
The smallest I could find around here was one for a 20gal, good flow, but concerned too much.

I would go with the Hydor Koralia Nano. Very small, and offers a wide flow range.

90% of the power heads out there allow you to control the level of flow. SO there is no concern a that a ph will create a hurricane in your living room.

i just got my koralia nano yesterday, it doesnt seem to have the umph that i was hoping for.
could it be because its a wider flow, as opposed to an mj and its straight-shooting output?

That's exactly what it is... because of the wider flow, it seems that it is much more gentle flow, whereas the MJ has a more concentrated flow area. I started off with a Koralia 1 in my 29g Biocube and wanted to add even more flow, so I added the Koralia nano, and the flow was so gentle, that I decided to take it out and add another Koralia 1, which worked out perfect.
