Pre-mixing saltwater

I've heard on this board of people pre-mixing saltwater for future water changes. My question is how long can pre-mixed water stand in a container before going bad. Also, does it need to be constantly moving (air stone, powerhead)? Thanks.

I would say indefinitely as long as you keep it covered and free of organic matters that can decay. I doubt if aeration is necessary though.

You should keep a powerhead or airstone in the container. It gets the salt to completely dissolve and not settle to the bottom of the container.
Also, add a heater and keep it the same temp as your tank. Fish don't like sudden temperature drops.

I have kept saltwater in five gallon buckets for three or four weeks at a time with no powerheads or heaters. Just be sure to keep a lid on it. About 24 hours before you plan on using it,put a powerhead and heater in it.And retest the sp gravity, and Ph.

I keep rodi water stored for a month or more before I use it. Haul it home in a trash can and put it into gallon jugs, away from the light. I've kept pre-mixed almost as long, like everyone said just aerate & heat first. HTH,
