Prefilter on return pump...Good idea or Bad idea ?

I have a prefilter on my Mag5 return from the sumpugium to the main tank. Is this a good idea ? My massive pod explosion came after I removed it for cleaning. Should I leave it of ? My main tank has a fair share of pods, but since the removal of the prefilter, it is like it's snowing !!!
Advice ?

well since my wet dry has a prefilter/trickle filter, i decided against using the one on my mag.. tank is clear, no problems

If you have another filter somwehre before the pump, I would leave it off. If not, you should leave it on to avoid pulling something through it..
