My letter to my US Representative and Senators:
As an Emergency physician I am on the front lines of quality health care ( I even serve on the quality improvement committee where I work), yet I see President Obama continue to vilify physicians. First he commented that we take out tonsils just to make a buck. In this speech he claims that surgeons are paid $40,000-$50,000 to amputate a limb.

I know for a fact no surgeon gets that kind of money for a single procedure. In fact the American College of Surgeons claims the real figure is between $700 and $1400.

"Yesterday during a town hall meeting, President Obama got his facts completely wrong. He stated that a surgeon gets paid $50,000 for a leg amputation when, in fact, Medicare pays a surgeon between $740 and $1,140 for a leg amputation. This payment also includes the evaluation of the patient on the day of the operation plus patient follow-up care that is provided for 90 days after the operation. Private insurers pay some variation of the Medicare reimbursement for this service."
Who is telling the truth here?
Why did President Obama use misleading figures which were wrong by a factor of more than 10?

Where he erred was stating the 'surgeon' would get $30,000 - $40,000 for taking off the foot. What he should have said was the patient's HOSPITAL BILL would be $30,000 - $40,000, which would probably be a pretty good estimate..

Lets see here I am on Medicare and because I am married and have kids we also get Medicaid somehow I do not ask Questions. Even so I am still listed as a Charity case by my Neurolgist in Chicago. My last bill I still get them for a 15 min appt was for 190 bucks for which Medicare paid 30 bucks to the OFFICE.

Maybe if all these blowhard politicians had actually went out and listened to people before trying to shove a complete revamp of they system with record speed there would be more support for it.
What I want to know is how do you cut medicare payments for services without cutting services? It is hard to find a doc now that will accept patients under traditional medicare. You start making it harder for other related tests and treatments paid for it will get worse.

I understand what he 'said'. However, that may not be what he meant. People get thoughts mixed up all the time when speaking in front of large audiences. Especially Obama.

Yeaa. I recall you using them to back up some of your opinions in the past. I guess it's only bull when it disagrees with your opinion. Did you even bother to read the information?

When Obama ,Pelosi,and Reid speak,its similar to flatulence and may be a major contributor towards damaging Green House Gasse they claim to want to stop in a effort to prevent the end of mankind .

What if... and open your minds here, but what IF, he really believes what he's saying when he says it and it's not a slip of the tongue??
Everytime he says a nonfact, people rush to his defense with "he made a mistake, he didn't mean it"... But what if he does? WHAT IF he really believes what he's saying.
Based on your above statement bionic, if you were his right hand man and you advised him yourself, you would be considered what they call a "yes man"...Don't correct him, just assume that he made a simple error...
Obama is a very intelligent man and he can speak to rich and poor on their level. I would not underestimate his ability to speak in front of large audiences and chalk his info up to..."he gets all mixed up"...
When he gave his inaugural speech after winning the election, he was meticulous and very serious, as if he fully understood the responsibilities at hand. That audience was pretty big and he did pretty well...considering...
He screws up his facts and somebody needs to tell him instead of just ignoring it and calling it a brain fart...

I think Obama writes a lot of his own speeches and it is getting him in trouble. Really idiotic this time, my wife (an M.D.) was really up in arms and insulted this morning over his latest "foot in mouth" episode against Doctors.

As much as involved Obama is with the healthcare reform issue, and trying to get a handle on the outrageous medical costs and inflated insurance payments, do you honestly believe he wouldn't know what kind of salary a General Surgeon makes, and what he would charge a patient to perform an amputation? Do you agree that the $30,000, or whatever number he stated, is an accurate estimate of what a hospital would charge a patient for an amputation to cover all the medical costs of the procedure?
This is just another right-wing attempt to make Obama look bad yet again. You REALLY need to find something else to do with your time.

But because of his misspeak that has NOT been corrected, there are millions now that believe this is what doctors get for surgery.....See the problem, regardless if a few of can deduce what he means...There are millions that won't....and he has been doing it ALOT lately.....makes one wonder if he is in the know or actively placing his own propoganda to the masses that will blindly follow or don't know better.

Things like "being the 44th president" or "for the first time I'm proud to be an american", I understand what they meant and I saw how the media took it all outa context. The muslim faith slip, I think I can even see what he was trying to say...
But this has me baffled.
You know what I wish he would do??
I wish he would set up an interview with, Oh I don't know, ANY media source and explain that he screwed up his words and that he was simply nervous or whatever. But he never does. He never back tracks and explains his scr3w ups...

I was trying to be nice in my above post. Trying to have a serious convo about the what ifs... then you get all weird... Try following through with the actual convo and see where it goes instead of putting on your blinders and getting all mad.

I was referring to the White House "fact check" site, I should have been more clear.
