Prizm Protein Skimmer questions....

I have a 55 gallon tank, FOWLR&LS, but once lights are upgraded, will be a reef tank.
Looing at the prizm skimmer, and wondering what you all think- would this be a good choice?
Also, have seen posts where people recomend that you use these with a timer- leave them on 12 hrs, off 12 hrs- is this a good idea? and if so, leave on at night, off in daytime or vice-versa?
I have also read that the skimmer will take out needed nutrients, etc- so what should i add to the tank to replace?
Final question, is this a self contained skimmer, or does it need to be used with a powerhead or other type of pump?
Please advise--- sorry so many questions! :)
Thanks...
Joe

I have one and like it as do most people on this board who have one. It is a stand alone unit with its own pump that hangs on the back of the tank or you can put it in your sump if to want. I run mine 24 hrs a day. Some people who do not like the noise that it makes have theirs on a timer so that they do not have to listen to it when they are not.

I am not really too concerend about the noise, as i jhave read how to make a 'muffler' to quite it down a little, but i have read that if you are using additives in the tank, it is good to cycle them on and off, having them off at least for a short while after adding stuff to your tank-- is this a good idea?

Protien skimmers can remove good things as well as bad things from your tank.
