does the air hose have to connect to the plastick insert thigie labled (II)? or just leave it hangin???

i just got the prizm last week. when you first hook up the filter you need to fill it w/ water and either plug the tube into the solid plug or hold your finger over the tube, let it prime and then you put it in the plug, (i dont know if it is marked II), but you will see a hole on top of it, you need to plug it in there and keep it there, this is what creates the air mixture
