Prob with Equipment

Hi I have a Canister filter and the model is for a 40 gallon tank and I have a 20 gallon is this ok?

yes. I usually double size all equipment= most manufactures overrate.

I agree, that should be fine.The only possible problem could be too much of a blast(current) from the output on that small of a tank.You could use a spray bar to diffuse this return across the entire length of the tank(back)...
