My tanks been runing 90gal since october 2002 and everything is
doing fine , corals , fish ect. My only problem is Im getting a layer of dirty black on top of the sand bed , its fish crap . Im running mag 9 going out to two returns ( the flex neck type, ball joints)
also to 802 power heads .
Is it possible on the bottom of the tank there is not enough water
movement. what other power heads can i us on the bottom.
thanks

You should have enough to circulate to the bottom and move things. Are you sure its fish waste?
Got a skimmer?
could be a black form of cynobacteria.
What type of sand bed do you have? Is the top layer hard in spots?

I have to ask all the things Thomas did..except the cyano thing, don't think there are any that are black besides at the deepest depths of the ocean for all things cyano check out http://www-cyanosite.bio.purdue.edu/ My guess would be it is either Cyano and you giving us the wrong color(more of a dark maroon/red) very very very bad diatom problem layering on the sand(brownish) or you do not have a big enough cleanup crew, or are overfeeding. That should be enough water movement fo a 90.

thanks guy's but there is no cyno because for one I went thru that , and the as red goes there is o . my tank wanter only uses distilled water , i bought it wholesale thru my business. tests are fine . I also have a protein skimmer aqua c 120 uv light 30 gal sump a prefilter filled with 15 gals of water , pvc goes into a plactice sump with filter pads then in to the main sump under the tank.
WELL IS IT POSSIBLE THE POWER HEADS ARE AT THE TOP AND NO FLOW ON BOTTOM. i TOOK ANOTHER LOOK ITS LIKE GRAY DIRTY.
