Problem with sump set-up

I have recently decided to set-up a 30gallon sump for my 55 gallon tank. After doing some of the measurements I realized that a 30 gallon tank would be a tight fit under the stand. I can go with a 20 gallon instead. Will this still help with water control. Also I recently acquired a 10 or 12 gallon tank from a friend of mine. Should I turn this little guy into a fuge? What do you think? Thanks for any advice.

Well IMO bigger is better but anything is better than nothing... A 20g sump should be big enough as long as you can fit everything you plan to use in it. A 10g fuge will help... I wouldn't try to put in a DSB in the 10g. Just some rubble rock and macro algae IMO.

ive got a tight spot underneath and behind my 55gal so im just gonna use several containers one positioned below the tank and two behind the stand. when i set up i only left about 10-11 inches behind my tank not thinking i was gonna add anything so had to just find containers that would fit. i have the set up on another thread on this page. im also thinking of putting a peice of plexi against the wall sort of like a splash gaurd to keep moistuere off the drywall.
