Product Name: Coralife 10gpd 3 Stage Unit
Date Purchased: 01/01/05
Approximate Cost: $100
Features: One sediment Filter, one carbon block filter and one 10gpd membrane. Clear housing for the filters. Produces up to 10 gallons of water per day.
Benefits: The benefits of RO water vs. Tap water can be found by searching the forums. Not all of the information about RO Units can be reviewed in this post. The main benefit of RO water is that it purifies tap water, getting rid of chlorines, chloramines, algaes, bacteria, heavy metals, nitrates and phosphates, which can cause problems in many marine tanks.
Pros: This unit is relatively inexpensive, it does produce pure RO water, and it uses ¼” tubing that can be used with any John Geise push in fittings on any other water purification system. You can add a DI filter because all of the plumbing is approximately the same.
Cons: If you have a high amount of heavy metals, including alumn, your RO Membranes output water may decrease to a slight drip. If flushing the membrane does not work, then the membrane needs to be replaced. Do not turn the water off to the unit, and do not keep the filters in any sort of light, or else algae will grow. Bacteria will also grow, making the output water not up to par.
Tips and Tricks: Do not mount the unit outside. Do not let the unit get below 40F or freeze. When you get your RO Unit, follow the directions to the letter, and make sure all packing material is out of the unit, and all gaskets are on and sealed tight.
Mods: No known mods for this product.
Variations: 20gpd unit, 50gpd unit, 100gpd unit
Personal Opinion: I like this unit, though after awhile, it’s output decreases tremendously and there’s not enough water to top off with. I liked this unit while I had it, as it did the job that it was designed to do. After awhile, I needed more than 10gpd of top off, so I had to switch to a larger unit.
