Product Name: Emperor 400 bio-wheel filter
Date Purchased: 01/01/2005
Approximate Cost: $129.99
Features: Dual biowheels, dual spray bars, and twice the filtration power as the Emperor 280. With one single strong pump that pulls water up and around two carbon chambers and through filter media, it is a dual, hard working device. Bio-wheels allow for detoxification of ammonia and Nitrite.
Benefits: The extra filtration from this unit will provide a very healthy freshwater or saltwater environment for your live stock. The filter media is relatively inexpensive, and should be found at most live fish stores. The bio-wheel detoxifies ammonia and nitrite very well by aerobic respiration.
Pros: The Emperor 400 is built very sturdy. The Bio-wheel does its job of detoxifying ammonia and nitrite. Also, it can provide some water flow to your main aquarium. The double filtration increases your overall biological filter. It is for use on 50 to 100gallon aquariums.
Cons: If the intake gets clogged, or the spray bar gets clogged, then the unit will not work very well.
Tips and Tricks: Getting the unit started is very easy, just fill up the back with water from your aquarium, and plug the unit in. Clean your intakes and your spray bar at least once a month, and replace the carbon and filter media every 30 days.
Mods: No known mods at this time.
Variations: Emperor 280 Bio-Wheel filter.
Personal Opinion: I really like this unit. By far it is the best out of all the other filters that I have used over the years.

I had one that quit working after 2 years... was nice to put in the charcoal filters in the slots and the filtration was nice.
What I didn't like? Always have a bit of water splash up on the glass of my lights and get the salt build up -- and you could hear it... and you see it hanging on your tank and in the tank.
Not a bad filter depending on the application... I don't personally care for it.. but I think they are a great filter with the benefit of filter material and charcoal pads.
