Protein Skimm with refugium?

This is an AKS protein skimmer inherited with the tank. Can anyone tell me if that is a refugium attached to it?
All the skimmers I come across are just cylindrical with no "box" attached. The powerhead pumps it through the skimmer, down into a chamber, up through some bio balls and finally through some cotton pads and back into the tank.

As you describe it that is very similar to a Bak-Pak skimmer. I'm not sure if anyone puts anything besides bioballs (I think its more to eliminate microbubbles). I think you can google the CPR bak-pak tho and find out a lot of general info about your skimmer as it is similar.
