Protein Skimmer a MUST?

Hi All! I've upgraded my filtration system to a Fluval 304. I know it will take a while to grow bacteria, so I've left the Whisper on for awhile.
Question: Is a protein skimmer a must in a 50 gal w/ LR (apx 25 lbs) and fish? I have the Skilter, but I bought it for the 20 gal, it is noisy and not very effective.
Everyone is doing okay in my new 50 gal. that is cycling. I know we still have a long way to go, but so far so good. THANKS! Sandy in Tucson.

Sandy,
Yes if you have Live Rock. You can purchase a pretty cheap one (like the seaclone) for about $80.00. this skimmer works OK and since you tank is pretty small it's all you should need. Of course if you want a better one there out there.

I'm not an expert but we have a 55gl with no skimmer and we have never had a problem...But it might be needed for some fish or corals?

A skimmer is not a must but if you have one you will love it. You would not belive all the stuff it pulls out of your tank, I think for the money the prizm is outstanding. I would highly recomend one on all sw tanks. Good Luck
