definitely do not run it during the cycle, an dyes i would get it fixed, but in the mean time, you could put a fish or 2 in(after cycle), if they are hearty and your levels are all good, but as soon as you could get it fixed, then i would get it ion the tank

ok when the valve comes in i'll get it fixed n prolly have to wait till tank is ready. i would love live rock but i know before i broke my neck i had 150lbs of lr and had to add some 2 part chemical everyday .i know one was calcium mostly the other was for ph . things around here dont get added everyday so lr would b a death sentence . it sucks i love lr but if a dsb will do the same job good. how about charcoal?for filtration? yes or no?

no charcoal, a dsb is actually better than lr
but i can't see wahy you need to add every day, myabe your water, but we only check and add every week or so
charcoal can be used from time to time, but not always

well i guess the daily thing was a lfs sales thing but i do know that the coralline and this plant stuff florished. this is a very scary descision.watching hundreds of $ of lr die is scary. what needs to be added weekly?and the amount of work involved?(since i have to get others to perform these actions)

just est and add as needed, calcium and regular testing for other things, ie trates, trites ammonia, and so on
you will get a feel for the tank, we all do

oh yeah, wihtout a skimmer, especially with a newly set up tank, make sure to do water changes, alot, like 10 or more %(maybe even 20 to 25) each week, until you get teh skimmer running
