Protein Skimmer or not in a FO

I've been told conflicting things: that's it's a good benefit to acquire a protein skimmer; or, protein skimmers are mainly required for reef tanks not necessarily FO. What is your opinion?

In my opinion protein skimmeing is a good idea on most ANY saltwater tank.
It will remove much of the organic compounds and improve the quality of the water ..... period.
They are wonderful devices .... if you don't have one, get one if you can, and you WILL see and be able to measure the difference in your water quality.
A most vital piece of equipment as far as I'm concerned.

When I was shopping for my new setup, I was told different thing by different stores. Some told me a fish only tank did not need a skimmer, and others told me I would be foolish not to have one.
I did get one andI think it helps with water conditions. It produce dry like foam and the water in the collection tub is gross, so it is doing something.

Protine skimmers may not be required for fish to live in a FO tank especially if it isn't over stocked. IMHO if there is a filter that is proven to increase water quality by taking out the waste before it begins the nitrogen cycle I figure it is a good investment. It might boil down to are you trying to save money and cut corners or do you want to go for the gusto.
I would also think that if you didn't have a skimmer you would have to maintain the tank more by doing more water changes to take out the increased neutrients to control algea growth and other such related problems.

I was not a believer in skimmers for a long time. Then I got one and recently added one to my full reef. I can't believe the crud that these 2 skimmers produce from the tanks they are on. You don't have to spend a fortune on one there are many good ones out there, but they are worthwhile to have.
