Protein Skimmer Question

I was wonder after what time you can start your protein skimmer on a tank and how long does it need to be running to be effective?

you can start it anytime IMO but give it a few weeks to break itselft in

So i dont need to buy a protein skimmer until the tank cycles ???that would be great the LR is harsh on the wallet
