Protein skimmer question

I have a 200 gallon reef tank that used to be a show tank for a store. I have 3 tangs, 3 damsels, a clown, some peppermint shrimp, snails, an anemone, and a bunch of soft coral and mushrooms. The tank came with all the equipment minus the protein skimmer. There is not enough room in the compartment under the tank for one of these. The storage area housing the equipment is only a foot or so high. There is also no room on top as the lid is made to fit and very heavy. This tank may have been a freshwater tank as there is no independent sump. It has a very interesting design where the water is circulated through the rock at the bottom and pumped up through the back wall to drip back into the tank.... Kind of like a built in sump. Overall water quality is good although I am fighting red slime due to poor circulation. I am waiting for more power heads to arrive.
Anyway, I keep hearing that I need a protein skimmer to help keep the red algae from coming back once I get rid of it...but I am not sure how to go about it with this particular tank. I have a skimmer that used to sit in the sump to my old tank...but since this tank doesn't have a sump, I am at a loss. Any suggestions?

you have tight fitting lids?
you may want to lose them JMO
they cause salt creep and low oxygen exchange, then you can cover the tank with egg crate and get a hob skimmer
awesome tank btw
