I also found it difficult to decide on what type of protein skimmer that I would need for my 20 GALLON.
Though I have done somewhat of a thorough research, I can't seem to find a quality skimmer for a decent price.
As Jared said, I would also be willing to pay a little more for an increase in quality, but I am still looking for a low price.
A person at my LFS told me that they found a Red Sea something-or-other for his 50 gallon that was $60.00. Is this what I want?

in the equipment and dyi forum a person answered CPR brand skimmers. i dont think anybody wants to pay the price that all skimmer companies ask but if your going to get the best i think euro reef has them
please, anyone...help
i only fear that most companies make their equipment for larger tanks and that there might be an alternative to the expensive since i have such a small tank capacity and small bioload, please help me not make the wrong choice.
does anyone know of a company that specifically designs a skimmer for a nano tank???? other than the ones that say "up to 100 gallons"

The CPR BacPac is a good choice for a tank your size. The RedSea Prism is also a good choice. The AquaC Remora is probably one of the best small tank skimmers but you will pay a price. When it comes to small tanks there is just not the selection like for big tanks. I run a Remora Pro on my 35 and it does a good job. This skimmer is rated for three times the size of my tank.

I found the seaclone 100 i put on my hospital tank does the job well.. It was a replacement from my display tank. I never saw it actually get dry foam like the berlin gets though..

is the seaclone 100 very loud????
how bout the aqua c remora or urchin series???? does anyone have any experience with either of these skimmers?

The AquaC are fairly quiet. Don't know about the SeaClone. All HOT skimmers make noise. The Remora and Urchin makes a muffled hissing noise.

cpr bak pak's are a good choice for smaller tanks. there is a guy selling the bak pak 2r and the bbx combo bubble trap and preskimmer on ----. he is an employee of cpr and they are factory seconds with cosmetic blemishes. he is selling other cpr products as well. anyway, the combo is going for about $115 plus shipping. there is also a website to get the seconds for $105. cpr has excellent customer support. email me for the site that sells the seconds. diddleyd@msn.com

For my 20 Long I have found that a Skilter (cobination filter and skimmer) works very well. A lot of people on this board don't like them or have had problems, but mine has been wonderful and the price was right.
