protein skimmer

i am to get a 55 gallon aquarium and i am wandering if i need a protein skimmer. i also would like a estimate to how much it would cost

depends on size and brand. Try to get one that is rated for a larger system than a 55 like a 70 or 90 gal.

It is highly recommended that you have one, but you do not need one immediately if that is what you are asking. Some recommend not using a skimmer while cycling your tank, but some will tell you the opposite. If you start off without one, I would suggest planning on getting one within the first 4 months or so, about when you start adding livestock.

Unless you do large frequent water changes, have a lot of LR and LS, and a low bioload I would run a skimmer.

i ran without one im my 55g for almost a year. all i had in the tank was a pair of clowns and a firefish. no LR,LS, or anything. al i had was one marineland 400 filter that ran carbon 24/7. i never had any problems. but then i added all my LR, protein skimmer and fuge in when i got my baby hippo. cuz i knew he would have a huge bioload

IMO a protein skimmer is the best chemical process filtration device you can get as far as bang for your buck. Get the best unit you can afford
