Proteins Skimmers

Ok, i am getting a Large tank in less than a month, at the momment it is going to a 90g predrilled with, however, as the date gets close (January 13), I tend to get more exited about maybe getting a sligher bigger tank (started with the idea of a 75 (LOL)... No one gave the memo on the addiction on this hobby...
Anyway, the LFS recommands the Coralife Skimmers, as that is what they are using on their tanks, however, they can order any skimmer a person wants, so what is the best skimmer (with a medium price range)... I am not wanting to go for broke with the bank LOL. Also, why do people cringe about the Coralife protein skimmers....are they that bad?????

octo nw150 is what i recommend. its cheaper then the coralife and like 10000000x better.
i have one on my 125 and love it
my buddy has the CL220(i think) on his 75 and its a real pain. never stays adjusted, loud, and leaked twice on him already where he had to seal it with silicon

Thank you very much.. I have seen alot of the others that people have had and i look at spending between 1500-1700 on everything, and I can not justifiy 500 for a Protein Skimmer on a tank that is even under 180, which i am getting in the summer.. I dont want to try and move that size tank in winter

Actually, from what I am seeing compared to here it is about $10.00 but has much better reviews and is rated for up to a 180 Gallon tank... this looks awesome

ASM, Octopus are good intermediate priced skimmers. IMO, stay away from Coralife, if financially possible. Another thought...Get a skimmer that is rated for at least 1.5-2x your water volume and you won't have to upgrade later.

i agree with the above. also, is this going to be a reef tank? you might be better off with the 75 gallon, since the 90 is almost identical, except for it being a tiny bit deeper. generally, the fish don't use that top few inches of the tank and you are going to have a heck of a time reaching the bottom. trust me, you'll be reaching to the bottom regularly.
also, it's just a few more inches of water your lighting will have to penetrate. the 75 is a better choice for a reef tank.

Yes, it is going to be a reef tank, however the 90g is Pre-drilled, which is the main reason I was going to go with it, so I could have a closed system, as a few of the fish that I like seem to be of the jumper varity. The info on the Octo NW150, says it is rated for up to 180, so I figure the with 75/90 it should be a well invested supplement..... so the for the 180 I should be looking at a protein skimmer rated for around 360????? Also, 180 will be a reef tank as well.. should i leave it as a reef or have the 150 instead???

just because you have 3 extra inches of water or so at the top of the tank is no indication that your fish won't jump out.
a 75 is a better tank to use as a reef tank than a 90, for the reasons i mentioned. both can be purchased reef ready, or not.
i don't know what you mean by "closed system". all of our systems are closed systems really. do you mean it has glass tops? you can also get those for any tank. i don't recommend glass tops though.
ASM (all seas marine) makes the ASM skimmer.
check out the "MSX 250" for the large tank you mentioned.

If I were to get a protein skimmer, it would have to be a EuroReef.
In the last year or so, I have gone skimmerless.
