I am having problems with using my protien skimmer and I hope somebody has a simple solution. I have had the same skimmer for a couple of years now, it was a great gift from a friend, but it's so frustrating at times I must be doing something wrong. I have a 55 gal tank with a sump and that is where I place the skimmer,as soon as the water level changes one or two days is all, the skimmers, (bubble layer) lowers rendering the skimmer inefective,I try to adjust it and a few hours later it's overflowing. Is ther a way to make it independent of the sump level? it consist of a pumo connected to an air line which is pumped near the top of the skimmer. I tried using restrictors to no avail.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as more often than not the unit is not working. Thanks HAWK

Within the sump..the skimmer will adjust itself and perform in accordance with the pressure of the water as determined by the water level. Keep your sump water at a constant level...

What brand and model are you using? has it been cleaned out lately. Hows it set up? input pump, outflow, etc

I have been running for 1 year without a protein skimmer. 75 gallon tank with a 20 gallon tank for a sump. I built a series of baffles, added carbon to make the water clear, put in a filter and at the last step before the return to the tank, filled it with live rock. I thought about buying a protein skimmer but was told I could get by without one. I am setting up a refugium next. Keep up on the water quality, and the water changes and you should not have any trouble ditching it if it is giving you a lot of trouble.
