Pufferlover - Another question on my Puffer

I have my puffer in an 18 gal tank (it was my calurpa tank). The tank is bare except for a heater and a magnum 350 with a micron filter. I'm treating with copper. He's been in the tank for 2 days and the ammonia is 1.0.
Can I let it go up anymore before I do a water change?
How much water should I change? is 25% enough?
How long do I need to treat him?
Thanks for the help and encouragement...

Well if the copper level is where you want and need it to be (based on the copper you are using and a test kit that I hope you have) a water change can be done as long as you treat the replacement water with the number of drops of copper to put it where it should be. I hate to admit this here but when I treat with copper I test every other day for strength but I have never done tests for other things (I hear the groans out there now- but it is just how I do it not what is considered the right way to do it). I have never lost a fish while using my good old SeaCure Copper (I have a 55 gal drum of it here- least someone believes me I'm kidding). I currently have a little 20 gallon with a eel and baby Pork under copper for a Ick problem with the new baby Pork (he is fine now and the 21 days is almost up). Today I did a 3 gal water change and added 3 drops to the new water before I put it in later I tested and it was at .15 where I need it to be to do the job. Now again I should mention that a Pork has scales so I use Copper a Dogface is smooth skinned and with them I use hypo-salinity as I am afraid of copper burn on them (have had that happen in my early days).
