Pump Question

I'm getting a mag drive pump for a return from the sump to the main tank. Is it ok to put a ball valve in the line from the pump to the main tank to reduce the flow, or will this make the pump work to hard shortening its life and causing mechanical problems?

I have a ball valve on mine and the only time I think it is straining is when you close it too much you can hear the motor straining. Other than that it seems to work fine.
