PUMPS- IWAKI, LITTLE GIANT WHICH DO YOU PREFER???

Has anybody had any experience with Iwaki, Little Giant, or Sedra pumps?? Which of these will not heat up the water the least?? Or do you have one of these, is it quite. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Justin

I had a Little Giant for many years. Worked great without much heat buildup. From what I have heard, Iwakis are on par with Little Giant.
If you have never had an external pump before, they are much louder than internal pumps, but I still recommend them highly.

I have a little giant. It's been on my tank for 5 weeks and have noticed that the temp. went up slightly. I'm not sure if it's the pump or the UV.sterilizer or a combonation of both.

while i dont have experience with those ones, i am using 2 supreme mag drives on my 200+. I am a little over 2000 gph combined and i figured that if one fails for some reason, i will still get some filtration instead of everything stopping.

I say Iwaki all the way. Very powerful and totally cool , no heat. I know some people who have had them over ten years and still going strong.

I had a mag drive for some time worked very well and a great price, but I was cleanning it and when I put it back together I over tighened one of the screws and cracke it. I just bought a quiet one a couple of months ago and love it very quiet and pumps like crazy. Good Luck

Hey Deuce-
Seems like people like Iwakis here. Good to know.
Advantages of external pumps are that they are generally stronger, more reliable and don't transfer as much heat.
A disadvantage is the noise. But if your stand is enclosed it is not so bad. I actually used bed foam cut to fit as insulation to dampen the noise.

I have had good experience with both Little Giant and Iwaki, but I like the Iwakis better. They are a little quieter than the Little Giants I have used (I haven't tried the "SQ" types), and are very strong. They also have "fins" on the motor so that it's like a built-in fan. The Iwakis are more durable if they run dry for a little while. I think they are worth the extra money. The advantage of using an "external" pump, not all of the heat is transferred to the water, and you can have much more powerful pumps. A submersible pump transfers ALL of its heat to the water. If your stand is ventilated, you can manage the heat much better with an external pump.
