I got this urchin 3 days ago and today I noticed it is covering itself with shells I had on the bottom. Is this normal?

yup prefectly normal.
mine carries shells, small rocks, frags , hermit crabs, lettuce clips, suction cups, snails and feather dusters.
he has a lot of issues

if there is anything living in the checkered shell in the pic above, I would try to remove it if possible. It could be a sundial snail which are predatory and eat soft corals, in particular zoanthids.

Now I know what that darned snail I (had) was...kept having trouble with my zoos..and saw that lil critter on it.......and now I have a name for it!!

No, nothing in those shells. I got them because I thought the crabs would use them. I've seen them check these shells out but they dont switch over. Maybe they know its not a crab shell?
