OK I noticed some of you breifly talking about PU. Was wondering if this is THT STUFF or what? How does it measure up to other products? How does it affect water chemistry? What are the other products used by some of you? I bout a bottle and starting to use it on my newly cycled tank and wondering who preffers this and why. Also who doesnt and why.

If you have added live rock to the tank that has Coraline on it and keep calcium levels 400 or higher its just a matter of time before you have more Coraline growing than you might want.

Buy a calcium additive and a calcium test kit and keep levels around the 400 to 450 range. You will have a purple tank in short order.

I tried purple up after reading about it on here. I have three tanks. The one that I added nothing to has gone crazy with coraline, and the two that I used purple up in have absoloutely no coraline at all.

coraline doesnt do anything at all but use Ca. weather it is in a reef or not. It can provide food to your urchins. but that is jsut about it. it jsut looks nice.
And purple up doesnt do anything but add Ca and other trace elements. A quality salt would do a better job IMO because you wouldnt be overdosing anything like you have the great potential to do with products like purple up where you cant test for everything.

Don't forget about alkalinity... when adding calcium the alkalinity needs to be tested and added accordingly. Coralline and calcifying corals need both calcium and alkalinity to grow.
I agree with everyone else... it's not needed. Keep your calcium & alkalinity in line and keep a low phosphate level and you will have no problem growing coralline.

So I take it it causes the stuff to grow on everything eh? Well Ill useit very sparingly and get an alk. test kit and calcium. Stop using it when my rock prettys up. Its already starting to get its color back from the cycle. Tanks looking great!
