I tried it. I have three tanks and in the two I added it too nothing happened except it threw my levels out of whack. In the tank I didn't add it to the coralline growth has been explosive. IMO it's a waste of money. If you do try it though make sure to monitor your alkalinity, calcium and ph closely.

well, i used it after my cycle.
im not sure what is normal coralline algae's growth like, but after i used it, i can see purple dot everywhere, and my rocks are covered with a faint color of purple/green(not green algae, more glowy green, rocky) and even some part of my sand are purple (not slime algae)

I have used it for probably 1.5-2 years, I love it. It has never made my level wacky. I set up up my new 120 about 5 weeks ago, and used some LR that I had to recure myself, it was almost white, Now everywhere the whitish rock gets light it has coralline growth, the back of aquariums has coraline all over it, I have to scrap the front and side almost daily to get the coraline off, so I can see my pretty fishies and corals!!! My turbo snails look like Giant Pink and purple hunks of coraline crawling around. I came to know of it through a friend who tried it for a week and saw a huge difference.
Also it helps it move along faster if you already have established coraline on a piece of LR.

Alyssia, why is everything of yours opposite of what most people consider normal??? What do you do? LoL Just kidding!

I agree with Alyssia. If your calcium and alkalinity are correct and stable and you have live rock with coralline growth on it you should get good growth. IMO if you use a good salt mix and you monitor your water quality you should never have to add anything to your tank unless you're keeping animals that require more of something that your salt does not supply.

I also agree - it seemed to affect our levels-but could not say if it was definitely the purple up-but we stopped using it....

I like Purple Up but like anything - if you add something to the aquarium you should test for it.
After time, Purple Up does have the potential to raise the calcium too high. I had that problem once. However, once you get the level down if you test weekly before adding it, you shouldn't have problems.
I still use Purple Up and love it.

Hi Denise,
Thanks for the response. Good information. Could anyone tell me why this product would raise the calcium level in the tank? Does anyone understand the chemistry, so I can fix the depletion in the (alkalinity--maybe?), that would cause an increase in the calcium level?
Everyone's help is excellent and I really appreciate it! Most constructive thread I have had.
Thanks again

that is basically why you are adding purple up , it is not a biological additive, you are not adding purple coralline algae, it is basically a calcium additive, supplying enough calcium in your tank for coral, and hence , purple Coraline algae to thrive. if you have a good amount of purple coraline algae, it is a good indicator that your calcium levels are right, or high enough, although by all means you should still test for it.
calcium , pH and Alk are all very closely related. if they are all ok , then you should add kalkwasser to maintain, or dose calcium if you have a voracious calcium -eaters- that will keep it steady. if one of them is way off , you need to fix it before the others get out of whack too

I have used it for a while with good results of coralline but following the directions of daily my calcium got way too high so I cut back to once a week and my levels have been fine since.

the directions say no more than a capful / 50 gallons / day.
so less than that is good for your system, and that is fine
