i just got a 5 gallon tank from my sister and i really want to make some sort of use out of it. i have a 36 gallon reef tank and was thinking of turning it into a small sump or maybe a quarantine tank. is it easy to turn a 5 gallon tank into a sump? and does anyone know where to get some diy plans for it? or should i just save it to quarantine new fish? any ideas/opinions would be great...thanks

small reef?
it would be too small for a sump, IMO.
qt maybe depending on the size of fish you keep

It's too small for an effective sump, QT tank.... doubtful as it's really to small to house much. Even if you did set it up (which I personally wouldn't) you have to keep an extra careful eye on your levels -- 5 gallons magnifies any little change... a little evaporation, etc. The more water volume you have the more stable your system will be (not saying bigger tanks are always easier to keep).

so a 5 gallon isnt a good size for a sump? do you know what a good size sump would be for a 36 gallon? im looking at just starting with a plain tank and doing a diy project to make a sump
