Putting bioball in overflow box..

I suppose you could - although I don't know why I would ever do it.
The sponge prefilter is intended to trap detritus and particles, whereas the bioballs are for bacteria growth.
If you want to remove particles from entering your wet/dry or sump - a prefilter sponge will help. It needs to be cleaned often.
If you do not want to reduce particles - don't use a sponge.
If you are wanting to increase biofiltration - the sponge or the bioballs will work - if left in place and not cleaned often, although the sponge will get pretty nasty, eventually plug up, and reduce flow to a point of possibly overflowing the tank.
Why do you want to add bioballs to your overflow ???
