PVC Filttration - Refugium???

So I have been working on my 240 FO tank, with my lfs. He is very knowledgable, I was telling him that I was possible going to put a refugium with calupera, instead he told me that he could put pvc pipes on the bottom of the tank and put live sand around it, or in it, I did not get a good explanation I was in a huge rush. He said it will bring my nitrates to 0, he has done it on a few tanks. Maybe I misunederstood him.... Anybody heard of this or have any ideas. Thanks, Justin

It sounds like he is referring to a plenum system. Here is a link <a href="http://www.pgjr.alpine.k12.ut.us/aqua/plenum.html" target="_blank">Plenum</a> that describes this system in a nutshell. But you can find a weath of info on the web about it.
