Q & A Board

I thought this board might be helpful to a lot of people. Instead of making a new thread everytime you have a question, you can post it here. Anyone can post, Anyone can answer.
I have a question: Is it necessary to run your lights while cycling?

No. There's nothing in there that needs them. And even if you cycle with a damsel (not recommended), fish don't need the lights. But it does give you some viewing pleasure. It's bad enough staring at an empty tank. And also gives you a chance to test how your lights might affect temp, etc.

Sman - Right. I have some sort of feather duster in there..
T316 - ok, I don't think cycling with a fish is right. Is there a way I can speed up the cycle process, though? Adding a raw shrimp?

I agree, unless you want to get the algae started early. And feather dusters are filter feeders, so no need for light.

lr and ls is my preference. There will be some die off, and slight brief odor, but it's quick, and then you won't have to go back and introduce the lr and ls after the cycle.

Thats what I used cycling my 12, and that's what I'm doing cycling my 10. Just put rock in yesterday..

If you get good quality live rock to cycle a tank with there certainly should be things on it that need light.
I definitely cycle with lights on. Not for a complete daylight cycle (12 hours) but definitely several hours a day.

I used LR, LS, and threw a raw shrimp in. I must have had some nice rock. I never seen a nitrite or trate spike, nor have I ever seen nitrites or trates since the tank has been up.

journey - I'm sure it's not 'awesome' rock.. LFS only carries "premium" fiji, and tonga branch.. but I haven't ever seen anything on them.. except a majano anemone.

Sorry ric, I don't know, no one else seems to either :-
I have two questions, though:

I honestly cannot remember topping off my first tank while cycling, I'm sure I did; I top off while cycling, correct?
and

If a tank is cycling for a month, with NO food, will flatworms be able to live?

#1....Yes..top offs have nothing to do with cycling. It has to do with evaporation. So if water is in the tank, and evaporating, then you will have to top off.
#2...Not sure, but my guess is Yes. If you have flatworms in there, and you have liverock, then the liverock is probably going to give off enough for them to survive.

Cannot answer any of the question, we used light during cycle, got an algae spike, tested with great parameters (LR, LS used) and added clean up crew.
Another questions:
Anyone had any problems with Peppermint shrimp? They are eating our sand sifting starfish.
