Today i set my Q t up.
I used 5 gal of new ro/ di water.
put in 3 small pieces of lr.
covered bottom of tank with sand(no i did not use a lot).
put the sponge that was in canister for 3 weeks in with a new carbon filter.
waiting for temp to get to about 76.
tomorrow will put some food in.
will also test for ammonia.
Is there anything I am missing
(other than fish)

Personaly I like to paint or cover the back and side wall with black paper/paint as it reduces the stress levels of the fish.

Might want to put a large PVC piece in there for another hiding spot. Will reduce stress levels and help to fight any disease off.

Yeah. PVC is much better than LR in a QT. I also like to go without substrate and you don't need carbon, it will absorb most meds. IMO, a QT should have nothing that can't be thrown out or sterilized after use. Use a HOB filter, keep and extra sponge in your DT system, and use the new sponge when you put live critters into the QT. The tank will be instantly cycled by the sponge from your DT system. Throw out the sponge when done, they're cheap. With no LR, you'll have nitrates rise; but that won't hurt the fish.

I like to use
A small cheap air pump with air stone, to keep the water as close to oxygen saturation as I can especially when medicating and as a precaution against nitrites
