Q-tank + Ammonia

To clear things up, the tank has been running for over a month. I was doing weekly water changes of about 10%, but had not checked the levels for a week. The filter pad was pretty clogged with food, that is probably what caused the ammonia to go up. I guess there is a limited supply of bacteria to break down ammonia since the only place for it to live is on that pad.

You should try using a sponge filter in your Q tank. Whisper power filters have a drawback in that they have just one cartridge and when that is changed your biological filter is gone. The sponge filter only needs a simple squeezing out from time to time and provides sufficient biological filt. for a small Q tank. When not in use I keep it in the sump of the main tank. They are very cheap too.
