A snowflake would be fine for your 55. He could get out because they are escape artist so make sure you have everything sealed tight.

Cross yer fingers and pray??
JK. Umm, actually, you can get like wiring at a home department store. Mesh netting could work. Use yer imagination, lol. But try something meshy, and it just might work.

Try eggcrate lighting grates from Home Depot. You can cut them to the exact shape of your tank with perfect size holes for your filters. Good stuff and cheap.

I had a snowflake eel a few months ago. Just as a precaution, I would watch your clowns. The snowflake I had, which was not very big, came into my tank and started using my fish as his food source. During the night, he would hunt down my fish and before I could net him out of the rock work, he killed my v-tailed grouper, niger trigger, and blue headed wrasse.
Mine did not try to escape very often. After I put food in the tank for him though, he would immediately try to jump out of the tank after he was done eating. Other than that, he pretty much just hung out in the rocks and decor.

snowflake eels are great, just make sure their always fed. I had one in a 55g such as yourself with a volitan lion and one yellow tang. Eel never went after fish but tried numerous times to escape. If you want a badass eel though that isn't too large, go for a blue ribbon eel. I bought one at 2 1/2 feet long but their oonly about 1/2 an inch in diameter.
