QT: Always ready or set-up when necessary?

Should you have a QT that has cycled running all the time as a precaution? Although I haven't had any problems with my salt tanks (yet), I have used QT tanks in the past for my freshwater fish and just set it up when I need it and break it down when they are all better. With salt tank do you need to have one that has cycled and is running all the time in case? I figured that the fish shouldn't/wouldn't be in a QT long enough that a water change every week wouldn't keep under control. What's your advice so that I may plan ahead for when disaster strikes.

I am not sure of the correct answer, but to play devils advocate. I would just set it up when needed with water from the main tank. It has already been cycled, and is at the same level as the tank this fish will be going into. just a differing opinion.

Looks like it's personally opinion. I don't have allot of room so setting up as necessary would be better for me. Plus I have two salt tanks, so if one is having problems I can use water from the other to set-up the QT. I don't want to think what happens if both get sick  Thanks everybody!

Did you check out the FAQ thread at the top of this forum? QT should be considered before fish are sick, meaning QT before a fish ever enters your tank. If you do this, you will significantly reduce the chances of having to deal with a serious infectious problem effecting your fish, or even your whole tank.

I do QT the fish before adding them to the tank, but I set-up a QT tank when I do this and then break it down. that's what I was asking...like I said though, it just seems personla preference. Thanks!
